2 Suspects paraded for threatening Akpabio's life

THE unpretentious support which Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has displayed for President Goodluck Jonathan in various instances has earned him a message of threat to his life.

The threat message allegedly came by proxy, from one of the political chieftains in the state, Dr Ime Umanah, who was hitherto believed to be his top supporter.
The suspect arrested in connection with the text message,  Ikemesit Iyire, a middle aged man who sent the text message to Governor Akpabio’s phone and Dr  Imeh Umanah, who allegedly instructed him to send the message, were both paraded by the State Security Service in Akwa Ibom on Wednesday evening.
Director of SSS in the state, C. T. Minti, read out the content of the threat message to journalists. The message reads:  “Our intelligence has confirmed that you (Akpabio) just bribed Okwesilieze Nwodo, the national chairman of the PDP, to manipulate election in your state and frustrate northern aspirants. We know that you are Jonathan’s chief financier.
“Your speech on his declaration and subsequent utterances are a confirmation of how well you hate the North. I, hereby, on behalf of the North and Boko Haram Islamic sect, declare our hatred for you and your household. Prepare your squad of kidnappers, you will soon hear from us. Is it a coincidence that loved ones of your political opponents are abducted and tortured? How will you fell (sic) if your wife suffers the same ordeal the captain’s wife is facing, the sexual humiliation your boys are putting her through just because he wants to contest against you? The wrath of Allah will not spare you when we strike, you infidel. You sold Ibori out, the North will ensure you face the same ordeal.”
Umanah admitted knowing Iyire, adding that he discussed with him to send a text message to the governor but denied dictating the message to him.
According to him, the message was sent to make the governor to sit up and mind his utterances in public. He added that it was not meant to be a threat to the governor’s life and that he (Umanah) was “a man of peace in the state; anybody can testify that I don’t look for trouble. I have repeatedly advocated a peaceful and violence-free campaign. I can never ask anybody to send threat message to the governor.”
Asked why he didn’t advise the governor directly since they were close, he said he had done that several times, adding that he even held a meeting with Governor Akpabio in Calabar three days before.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the suspects will be charged to court today
