ANPP lawmakers buy presidency form for Shekarau
Members of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Caucus in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday, purchased the party's presidency form for a candidate, Ibrahim Shekarau.
Mr Shekarau, who is the governor of Kano State, had in August publicly announced his presidential ambition in Abuja.
The lawmakers, numbering 54, came to the ANPP secretariat in Abuja, where they purchased the form for N11 million.
The ANPP Leader in the House, Mohammed Ali Ndume told journalists that the lawmakers had carefully studied Mr Shekarau's achievements since he assumed office in 2003 and decided that he should replicate same as president of the country.
"Shekarau has also supported us in the House of Representatives and I can tell you that even the leadership of the House associate with him proudly.
"We have therefore, decided on our own, to contribute among ourselves N11 million to purchase this form for him, as token of our appreciation for what he has done for us, our party and for Kano state", he said.
He described ANPP as a progressive party, which he said is now a formidable party that is poise to defeat all other contenders for the Presidential seat in 2011, saying Mr Shekarau is the best choice for the party.
Dependable
Speaking at the forum, the national chairman of ANPP, Ogbonnaya Onu, who was represented by the national secretary, Lawal Shettima, said Mr Shekarau has become the first aspirant to purchase the form for the party's ticket.
"This shows that Shekarau is serious about his ambition, and that is the reason why you are supporting him", he said.
Mr Onu, who thanked the lawmakers for supporting the party, said he was excited about the quality of representation they have been giving.
"The only hope for the development of Nigeria is to wipe out the PDP in 2011", the chairman said. "We now have a new, united ANPP and we are bringing back more members who have left so that we can all work to weeding out the PDP at all levels of governance.
"We are going to do this by first strengthening internal democracy in our party, and the new executive of the party is serious about transparency and the supremacy of the party laws."
Other presidential aspirants on the ANPP platform are Dauda Birma and Ibrahim Tofa.
